Why does my boiler go bang when it ignites?
Why does my boiler go bang when it ignites?
When your thermostat tells your boiler that it’s time for heat, gas starts flowing to your boiler. When the burners finally ignite, there’s already a large amount of gas sitting in the combustion chamber, so it causes an explosion, which can make a bang or boom noise.
What causes explosive ignition?
On auto ignition boilers it is weak spark caused by wrongly position electrode/damaged electrode/damaged lead or wrongly adjusted gas pressure. Can also be a faulty gas valve passing gas when it should not then when spark is added BOOM.
Should a boiler make a noise?
Is your boiler making a loud banging noise, or are the unusual sounds coming from a radiator or central heating pipe? If you can hear a creaking noise, it may just be the sound of pipes changing temperature – this is perfectly normal.
Is it normal for a boiler to make noise?
Kettling is exactly what it sounds like: noises that sound like a whistling of water coming to the boil. It’s caused by an accumulation of limescale or corrosion debris in the system, sometimes within the boiler itself. Unfortunately, this is a natural process and happens more often in areas with hard water.
Why is my boiler clunking?
Clunking and banging noises are called ‘kettling’ noises, and are caused when limescale accumulates on the heat exchanger. This blocks the flow of water and causes some water to boil, steam and expand, as seen in a kettle and so your boiler could be making loud banging noises.
What causes a gas boiler to ignite with a bang?
Similarly if the burner pressure is too low. Similarly if the “soft-start” on some gas valves has been set too slow. Similarly if the ignition electrode gap (on spark ignited) is too large or too small. Etc., etc., etc.. Please elaborate on make & model. I wouldent like ot comment on the gas, but I did have a similer problem at my old house.
Is the combi boiler loud when the burner ignites?
It has recently been serviced and found to be working fine, and from living with it, it does work well in heating up etc. so no complaints from a functionality point of view. The only issue is that every time the burner ignites (for both central heating and hot water) it vibrates loudly, which can be heard and almost felt throughout the house!
Why does my boiler make a popping noise when it fires up?
If your boiler makes a single BANG only when it fires up, it’s most likely due to delayed ignition. If your boiler makes recurring banging, popping noises as it operates, it’s most likely due to “kettling”.
What to do if your gas burner won’t ignite?
Repair methods for gas burners that won’t ignite. Repairs for furnace or boiler gas burner igniters that won’t stop clicking. Diagnose and repair loud bang or whoosh when boiler or furnace gas burners igniters. Watch out: some of these conditions are dangerous.

Why does my boiler make a tapping noise when I turn it on?
You’re more likely to experience a tapping noise when you first turn your boiler on. Kettling is caused by a build-up of limescale in your system preventing the natural flow of water as it is pumped around your central heating system. Kettling resulting in a tapping noise is more likely to be located in your system’s pipes or radiators.
