When your water heater won’t drain, the most likely cause is a clogged drain valve. This is generally the result of excessive sediment build-up within the tank. When water is heated, the minerals in the water separate and settle to the bottom of the water heater.

What should I do if my boiler drain is clogged?

I have used house pressure to back flush plugged drain valves on boilers and water heaters. Then use a double female at the boiler, I use a washer supply hose for that fitting. Then with the supply on I open the plugged drain valve for a few seconds. This will usually back flush and clear the obstruction.

Is the water in the boiler site glass clean?

I have read when there’s a lot of gunk in the tank water in the sight glass is muddy, but as you can see the water is clean (regardless, I still want to flush the tank). The other thing that concerns me is the water in the site glass is waaay above the recommended water line level.

Why is my steam boiler not turning on?

Steam Boiler wont turn on! I have checked all the switches and everything seems to be ok. I am wondering if it is one of the low water cutoffs thats causing this. My boiler has a McDonnell cut-off 67 which seems to be ok and is clear of any crud. It also has an old McDonnell 47-2 Feeder/Cut-off.

How often should I open the drain valve on my steam boiler?

Increasing the pressure to 10PSI or anywhere near that could damage your main vents and your radiiator vents and possibly even open up some leaks. Normally, if the boiler has been in use for a while and is not a new install, just opening the drain valve once a month, during the heating season and draining water until it get clean should suffice.
