How do you prepare for a Defecography?
You should take your regular medications with small sips of water at least 2 hours prior to the study. Defecography is a technique in which a barium contrast medium is introduced into your rectum after the radiologist performs a rectal examination. The barium is visible within the rectum on X-Rays.
How long is a defecating Proctogram?
During the procedure you will be asked to pinch up the rectum, cough, strain and finally evacuate. The exam takes approximately one hour.
How is a Proctogram done?
You will be asked to lie down on a couch and a small tube will be gently introduced into your back passage. A white barium paste will be passed through the tube into your rectum. The tube will then be removed. If you are female we may insert some dye into your vagina.
How long does it take to get Proctogram results?
If you have come from home, the results will be sent back to the doctor who referred you for your scan. This process takes approximately 2 weeks, so unless other arrangements have been made you should expect to hear something after this time.

There is no prep for an MR Defecography exam. It is okay for you to eat, drink, and take your medications as normal. What should I expect during the exam? MR Defecography lasts about 30 minutes.
