What is VANOS rattle?
“Vanos” is BMW’s name for its variable valve timing units. The vanos rattle is caused by wear in the variable valve timing helical (slanted) gears. These gears are found on the camshaft, camshaft sprocket, and splined shaft which attaches to the vanos.
Does M62 have VANOS?
In 1998, a “Technical Update” was applied to the M62, resulting in the M62TU variants. New features include single-VANOS (variable valve timing for the intake camshaft) and electronic throttle control.

Is the M62TU reliable?
As a TL;DR, the M62 is overall a somewhat reliable engine. But, if it hasn’t been properly maintained, it can be a money pit. As with any old BMW, these cars become very expensive unless you are a serious DIY’er. The M62TU engines tend to be the worst out of the variants with respect to reliability.
Which BMW engines have vanos?
There are different types of Vanos systems which vary depending on your BMW’s model. BMWs that use this Vanos system: M50 engine (’93-’00) M52 engine (’93-’00)…BMWs that use this Vanos system:
- N52 engine (‘2004-‘2010)
- N55 engine (’09-‘Present)
- N62 engine (’04-’10)
- N73/74 engine (’05-’15)
Can I drive with bad VANOS?
Your good to drive it just don’t romp on it. Depending on the code it will tell you which one. You can clean it and reinstall and should not throw anymore codes. But might as well replace it price is negligible.
What RPM does VANOS engage?
4000 rpm is on the high side when your engine redline is 6500rpm. There isn’t much there below 2500-3000rpm (nearly 50% of the engines speed), not something that anyone would consider “torquey”. As far as my comment on building power at high rpm, that doesn’t limit it to just 4000rpm.
How do I know if my VANOS is bad e46?
Some symptoms that can indicate that your BMW is having trouble with the Vanos system include:
