Overall, the physical rewards (weapons, etc) are better if you choose Dawnguard. However, you cannot regularly use the powerful Vampire Lord form until after you’ve completed the main questline, or else the Dawnguard members will not accept you.

What level do you have to be for Dawnguard?

Dawnguard has a minimum level requirement of 10. I’d recommend waiting until 15-20 though since some of the quests are long and tough (lots of trekking through falmer infested territory).

Do you have to complete the main quest before Dawnguard?
