Unlike most animals, cats have a ‘right to roam’. There are no specific laws aimed at cats fouling on land. Cat owners also have a common law duty to take reasonable steps to ensure their cats do not cause damage to someone’s property or cause injury to anyone.

No veterinarian is required to euthanize a healthy animal; rather, they should carefully consider any other options that may be available. There are cases a veterinarian will refuse. Often, when this happens, the companion animal will be relinquished to a shelter, where they are likely to be euthanized anyway.

The RSPCA do not take action for stray cats or kittens unless they are injured or seriously unwell. If you are lucky, you will find a charity able to offer the cat a place right away; however, most charities are so overwhelmed with rehoming and stray cat enquiries that they must maintain waiting lists.

Take a food/toy reward out with you and sit down quietly. This way you can keep an eye on your cat while letting them explore freely and call them back if you feel like they’ve wandered too far. You should build up the length of time your cat is outside over a few sessions.
