How do RV water tank sensors work?
How do RV water tank sensors work?
A traditional tank sensor completes the circuit in a simple low voltage electrical system. They are mounted through the sidewall of a holding tank so that each sensor’s head is on the inside of the tank and the sensors physically ascend or descend in a line on the body of the holding tank.
How do you know when your RV tank is full?
There is another way to know your tank is full (or close to it) besides using sensors or sound. “Sound” is also a good indicator, but in addition to that method, the closer to full, the more it smells (even if you use chemicals). You’ll want to dump for sure when you can’t take the smell any longer.
How many sensors are in a fresh water tank?
Unfortunately, the system is not real accurate. As the picture to the left shows, it usually will have 3 or 4 “sensors” in the side of the tank. As each sensor becomes “activated” with fluid, it changes the monitor display inside the RV to indicate how full/empty the tanks are.
Can a water level sensor be replaced on a water tank?
WATER TANK LEVEL SENSOR PRODUCTS LISTED BELOW. Never replace float switches again with our CheckPoint™ floatless level sensors for water tanks!
What to do if your tank sensor is not working?
This can be cleaned off with standard anti-grease detergent and or a chemical or enzyme based holding tank digestant treatment. Tank sensors take a lot of the blame when a monitor panel consistently reads incorrectly, but they are rarely the culprits. You know you dumped it before you left the last campground, but your monitor panel reads full.
How are spark plug sensors used in water tanks?
Our spark plug sensors work in any water environment where traditional float switches are used. It’s made out of stainless steel to prevent fouling and deteriorating. The body of the spark plug sensor is used as a reference for the sensor and stainless steel rod is used as the setpoint for this controller.

What is the sensor on a black water tank?
The sensor inside a black water tank looks like little more than small metal nubs that are attached to the sides of the tank with small screws or fasteners. The design is simplistic.
Why does my RV holding tank sensor read full?
When RV holding tank sensors incorrectly read full, it is typically due to residue build-up connecting the sensors. This can be cleaned off with standard anti-grease detergent and or a chemical or enzyme based holding tank digestant treatment.
What causes a false reading on a water tank sensor?
Sometimes wet physical debris can get caught on the sensors inside the tank, which completes the circuit, and ultimately causing a false reading. This is even more likely to happen if you are going up or down a steep grade, or perhaps taking a sharp turn.
