How do you secure the last stitch?
If you’re sewing by hand, simply make a loop into the last stitch you made and draw the needle through it. When you pull tightly, you’ll make a knot that secures the stitch. Ending a stitch on a machine is even easier; just make a few backstitches and then cut the thread!
How do you end sewing?
Gently push the needle into the stitch and forward, so that the tip of the needle emerges at the end of the last stitch. Push the needle halfway through. Wrap the thread two or three times around the needle. Lay one finger gently on the loops to hold them in place, and pull the needle through, forming a knot.

Instead of starting to stitch at the cut edge of the seam, sewing several stitches, reversing, then sewing forward again (which results in 3 layers of thread), try placing the presser foot 3/4″ from the cut edge of the seam, begin sewing in reverse to the cut edge, then sew forward down the length of the seam (2 layers of thread).

Sew in reverse for a couple of stitches to the end of the fabric. Stop and sew forward for the length of the seam, keeping the seam guide lined up to sew a consistent seam allowance.
