Usually a bad or failing idle control valve will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential issue.
- Irregular idle speed. One of the most common symptoms associated with a problematic idle air control valve is irregular idle speed.
- Check Engine Light comes on.
- Engine stalling.

Are there any problems with my 454 c.i.engine?
The only problem I’ve had with mine is a small power steering fluid leak, which I plan on fixing this winter. Actually, the formula for descending any grade is to downshift until you find a gear that will hold your speed in EQUILIBRIUM– you are neither accelerating nor decelerating WITHOUT USING YOUR SERVICE BRAKES (brake pedal).
When did the Vortec 454 engine come out?

There were a few different trucks and full-size SUVs that came equipped this engine during the years it was on the market.
How does idle air control work in a GM TBI?
The air gap between the throttle body and the throttle plate is calibrated to allow enough air to pass by it for the engine to run at base idle speed. The IAC (Idle Air Control) valve utilizes the on-board computer to fine tune the idle speed according to engine conditions.
How is the idle speed of an engine controlled?
All engine idle speeds are controlled by the ECM through the idle air control (IAC) valve mounted on the throttle body. The ECM sends voltage pulses to the IEC motor windings causing the IAC motor shaft to move in or out a given distance a given step for each pulse often referred to as counts.
