The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have not approved Ampligen for wide use in ME/CFS. On January 2, 2018, the FDA approved the compassionate care program AMP-511 which “will allow treatment of up to 100 ME/CFS patients at any one time at approved clinical infusion therapy sites.”
Why is Ampligen not FDA approved?
The FDA had already rejected Ampligen twice, citing insufficient safety data.
How does Ampligen work?
Ampligen is believed to work by jump-starting your body’s natural anti-viral pathway and regulating levels of RNase L (a substance in your cells that attacks viruses), which can be high in people with ME/CFS. It’s also been shown to inhibit tumor cell growth. Ampligen doesn’t appear to suppress the immune system.
