What happens when a LiPo battery explodes?
What happens when a LiPo battery explodes?
If you get a small nick in the battery cable this could also cause the battery to short out. Puncture – when a Lipo battery becomes punctured all the energy inside is released in an instant. When this happens the battery rapidly expands and white smoke pours out which can turn into fire.
What causes LiPo to explode?
So why do LiPos explode? It’s actually pretty simple – the Lithium ions inside a LiPo do not like to be exposed to air. All LiPo explosions occur for one reason: one or all of the cells in the pack get punctured or ruptured somehow, exposing their innards to the air.
How common are LiPo battery fires?
While LiPo fires are rare, they can happen incredibly quickly and can do a lot of damage. All it takes is an internal short circuit to set the battery off. There is no way to predict when it will happen.
Are LiPo batteries explosive?
Some battery chargers have dual-outputs meaning they charge two batteries at the same time. NiMH batteries are charged using a pulsed charging method. Charging a LiPo battery this way can have damaging effects that can lead to fire and explosion.
Can a puffed LiPo explode?
Are Swollen Lipo Batteries Dangerous? Yes. That doesn’t mean that every battery that is puffed is going to explode as soon as you use it but it does mean that a high enough percentage of them are going to be dangerous that it isn’t worth the risk.

What do you do with a LiPo fire?
Here’s my thoughts:
- Get that burning LIPO out of your house/trailer and get it outside immediately.
- Keep the LIPO fire away from any thing combustable.
- To limit exposure to the Toxic smoke – try to stay upwind – and do not inhale it.
- Use fireproof bags to charge & store your LIPOs.
Can a puffed Lipo explode?
How often do lipo batteries explode?
LiPo batteries should last between 300 and 500 charge cycles depending on the usage of your drone, battery quality and how well you maintain them. If your batteries stop working well after only a few cycles, this means they could be damaged, defective or poor quality, and you should stop using them immediately.
Is it OK to use a puffed LiPo?
As long as it is very minor LiPo puffing & goes away after the pack cools down, it has been my experience that you can usually still safely use the pack and keep the swelling in check; likely not to its full discharge potential however.
