What is DMIX ALSA?
From the ALSA wiki The dmix plugin provides for direct mixing of multiple streams. NOTE: For ALSA 1.0. 9rc2 and higher you don’t need to setup dmix for analogue output. Dmix is enabled by default for soundcards which don’t support hardware mixing. You still need to set it up for digital outputs.
What does DMIX do?
Dmix extends functionality of ALSA and allows to play sound from multiple sources. This is functionality similar to what PulseAudio provides. From Dmix documentation page: PCM plugins extend the functionality of PCM devices allowing low-level sample conversions and copying between channels, files and soundcard devices.
What is Asoundrc?
The . asoundrc file (in your home directory) and /etc/asound. conf (for system-wide settings) are the configuration files for ALSA drivers. Neither file is required for ALSA to work properly. Most applications will work without them.
What is Ipc_key?
ipc_key : dmix , dshare and dsnoop plugins allow multiple clients to communicate with a single source/sink. This communication is done via this key (IPC = Inter-Process Communication).
