What makes homework effective?
In order to increase homework effectiveness, teachers must understand what makes homework effective. Cathy Vatterott (2010) identified five fundamental characteristics of good homework: purpose, efficiency, ownership, competence, and aesthetic appeal. Purpose means that all homework assignments are mean- ingful.
Does homework actually improve grades?
In 35 such studies, about 77 percent find the link between homework and achievement is positive. Practice assignments do improve scores on class tests at all grade levels. A little amount of homework may help elementary school students build study habits.

The most comprehensive research on homework to date comes from a 2006 meta-analysis by Duke University psychology professor Harris Cooper, who found evidence of a positive correlation between homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework performed better in school.
