Goat Island is a small island in Narragansett Bay and is part of the city of Newport, Rhode Island, U.S. The island is connected to the Easton’s Point neighborhood via a causeway bridge. It is home to the Newport Harbor Light (1842), residences, a restaurant, event space, and hotel.
Why is it called Goat Island Rhode Island?
In colonial times, goats grazed on this island and gave it its name. ‘Several’ pirates were hanged nearby and buried on the island in its early history, (see Gravelly Point at the west end of Long Wharf), Newport purchased Goat Island in 1673.

When was Goat Island built?
In 1816, Augustus Porter bought Goat Island from the State of New York. In 1817, he built a wooden bridge from the mainland to the upper end of the island. This bridge was destroyed by ice the following winter.

Can you walk to Goat Island?
Yes, you can walk on the causeway from Newport to Goat Island… There is a side walk and nice views of the harbor along the way.
