Why is my pool pump getting so hot?
Why is my pool pump getting so hot?
A pool pump can overheat in two ways: because of an electrical problem or friction. By far, the largest cause of your pool pump being too hot is a degenerative process where heat and age cause the pump to draw too much current.
Is it normal for water pump to get hot?
The internal components of a pump depend on the fluid flowing past them to keep them cool. If the pump loses prime, then the water inside of the pump casing can get extremely hot (due to the friction of the impeller) and eventually turn to steam.
Can a well pump overheat?
Your well’s water tank system limits how long and how often the well pump runs. When a pump runs for too long, it will overheat, and when it kicks on and off frequently, it wears out more quickly. This is called “short cycling” and can burn out your pump quickly.
Is the pool pump really hot to the touch?
Pool Pump is really hot to the touch. Pool pump motors, brand new out of the box and plumbed to a pool do run hot to the touch normally. These are not house fan motors that typically run cool, there is 220Volts, over 1000 watts(high speed) of power running through these motors and that equates to heat.
How does running the pump affect pool water?
The pump has very little effect on water temperature, other than mixing deep water with water higher up. To a small extent running the pump can increase surface agitation, which can increase evaporation, but the effect would normally be very small. Of course, if you have solar panels it is an entirely different story.
How much heat does a pool pump generate?
A 100-watt light bulb is far too hot to touch. A large 3-hp pool pump might generate almost 2,240 watts of power, which is more than sufficient to generate extremely large amounts of heat — and this does not even factor in the heat also being generated by friction from the moving parts inside of the pump. Heat is a byproduct of energy loss.
What should I do if my pool pump overheats?
If you check your pool pump motor and find it is far too hot to be able to touch with your hand, that’s not good. You should be able to place your hand on the motor for at least a few seconds without getting burned.

What happens if your pool pump runs out of water?
Just because your pump isn’t on fire doesn’t mean you’re not essentially burning money. Additionally, if your pump is overheating, it may also be running dry. A pump that runs without the necessary amount of water for too long may be damaged beyond repair—to the point of melting.
